Why Dustlark exists

The big map apps lock your maps behind tiers, track where you drive, and still leave you stranded when the signal drops. Dustlark is built on public-land data you already paid for as a taxpayer, packaged to live on your phone. No location history kept or sold. No ads. And every mile you record exports in open formats, offline, whenever you want.
One fair yearly subscription is coming, with accounts and end-to-end-encrypted sync. Here is what an account will mean at Dustlark, and all it will mean: your subscription, plus a sync space only your own devices can read. We cannot see your trips. We do not track you. Export never needs our permission. Online browsing runs through a no-log relay, and offline is not going anywhere: Dustlark works at zero bars today, and that will not change.
The Map
The whole backcountry, offline.
- Paint an area, download it. Frame the country you wheel, choose your layers, and pull just those tiles from the statewide archive, so the download is exactly as big as the trip needs. Search, terrain, even Wikipedia keep working with no signal.
- Eleven states live, built for fifty. Utah, California, Colorado, Idaho, Washington, Oregon, Nevada, Montana, Wyoming, Arizona, and New Mexico are live today. The deep layers roll out state by state: lidar relief, parcel owners, geology, mud intelligence.
- Legal routes, not guesses. Official Forest Service motor-vehicle maps plus BLM public-motorized routes, with seasonal closures checked against your trip dates.
- Five looks. Outdoors, crisp 1-meter lidar hillshade, vintage USGS historic topo, live aerial imagery, and a true-dark Night Stage that flips the whole app after sunset. Lidar hillshade is rolling out state by state.
- Land ownership down to the parcel. Public-land boundaries across every state we cover, with parcel owner names rolling out county by county, so you know whose gate you are looking at.
Plan Like a Guide
One card answers "should we run it?"
- Snap-to-trail routing with live elevation, grade, and a dirt-honest arrival time that slows down for the climbs.
- Fit for your rig. Lidar-measured road width against your mirrors, drop-off exposure, and side-lean, from the Garage profile you set once. Expanding as high-resolution lidar coverage grows nationwide.
- Mud and weather. USDA soil surveys crossed with recent rain and the trip-day forecast: "3 miles on clay-prone soil, give it two dry days." Mud intelligence expands state by state.
- Auto camps. Set your departure time and Dustlark splits a long route into driving days, then picks each night on legal public land, flat and near a campground. Drag any camp you want moved, and it stays put.
- Drag to reroute. Grab the line and pull it onto the road you meant. Only that leg recalculates. The rest of your route never moves.
From Your Drives
Your phone learns the trail.
- TerrainSense classifies washboard, rock gardens, crawl sections, off-camber lean, and steep pitches from your phone's motion sensors. Any mount, no setup, it self-calibrates as you start driving.
- A live dial on the map shows what the rig is feeling right now, a ring that fills and reddens as it gets rough.
- Your tracks paint themselves by measured roughness, and scrub back through any drive with the map and the graph locked together.
- Plan a route you have driven and the assessment card shows what you actually felt out there, not somebody's guess.
Convoy
Keep the whole group on one map, no bars.
- Pair a Meshtastic radio and every rig shows on your map with name, heading, and how fresh the fix is. The radios relay position rig to rig for miles with no cell service anywhere in the run.
- Navigate to a buddy. Tap a rig for a live distance, bearing, and compass heading. Regroup after a wrong turn or reach a broken-down truck.
- Help beacon. One tap pulses your position and reason ("stuck, need recovery") to every rig on the mesh until you cancel it.
- Message offline. Glove-friendly canned sends and typed messages hop the mesh like positions. "Airing down at the turnout" reaches everyone.
